Being A Psychic – A Gift Or A Curse?

For those of us who have been endowed with psychic abilities, it is fair to say, they did not always occur as something to be grateful for. They might have even shown up as a real hindrance to our lives! In my case, when my abilities first manifested I completely freaked out. I was very young and had none to talk to, to understand, or guide me. I ended up feeling lonely and isolated as none in my environment could relate to, or was going through what I was going through. Long story short, in less than a year, I forcefully shut down any psychic abilities.

Do you know what is sad about all of this? Not that it happened. Nor that It happened to me. Not even that I was so young when it did. Rather, that such an event is incredibly common. Most psychics are not lucky enough to be guided or understood through their journey. As a result, a lot of us wind up being victims of our gifts, forever misunderstood and ostracised.

What’s even sadder is that this is but a symptom of a larger issue at play. That we, as humanity, have turned our backs on everything that we cannot understand or logically make sense of. As a result, we have distanced ourselves from what our ancient traditions have been teaching us for millennia as well as from ourselves. We find it hard to understand our persona, our emotions, and feelings, let alone that of others?

“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul”.

I think that this ancient hermetic text couldn’t be more relevant. Our individual failure to understand, appreciate and celebrate our gifts, as well as the journey to mastering them, shows up in the larger already existing context we live in the world. A context that focuses on material accomplishments, wealth, position in society, etc – at the expense of our spiritual depth and development.

The material abundance in itself isn’t wrong. It should reflect an inner wealth that gets manifested in the physical plane. However, when that becomes the ultimate aspiration a person can look up to, that is when we know we have a skewered perception of the Universe.

Do I have the answer? No, I do not claim I do. Maybe, the whole point is for us to look and enquire into what it would take for us, as human beings, to open up to life and all of its unknown mysteries once more. In a way that celebrates the scientific advancements, and yet acknowledges the depths and magnitude of things we are yet to discover. Marry science and spirituality; the individual and the Universe; male and female; strength and vulnerability. “As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul”.

The one thing I do believe in is that however cheesy it may sound, life might just be about “the journey”. Not the destination. It is the polarising differences that until now have kept us apart, that in fact, link us all together. Once we discover that, maybe the new generation of gifted people will be born into a world that is prepared to celebrate them.
