Want to know what all this psychic jargon means? Don’t worry, this simple glossary guide will reveal all you need to know!

Psychic

The term “Psychic” is often used as a catch-all phrase for anyone who works in the paranormal. It actually describes someone who can see or sense things that are not obvious to most people. Psychics may be able to see ghosts, spirits and auras; they may be able to tune into atmospheres and know things about other people without being told. Our Psychics read using a strong sense of intuition and will work on their ‘hunches’, giving a greater insight into your life situation. A psychic reading is excellent for both those wishing to have a more general reading and those with a more specific area in mind.

Medium

A Medium is a special person who has a gift that allows them to communicate whilst fully conscious with spirits of those who are no longer living, angels or nature spirits. They are able to hear and feel thoughts, voices and mental impressions from the spirit world. They are able to bring messages from loved ones to provide proof of an afterlife. Generally, Mediums are unable to summon specific spirits.

Clairvoyant (clear vision)

A Clairvoyant has the natural ability to receive information about others using their Psychic gift. They tend to work without cards or any other tool and will mostly just sense or know information about you and your life.

Clairvoyance includes the ability to see in the ‘mind’s eye’ faces, scenes, colours, symbols, words and numbers.

Clairsentience (clear feeling)

A Clairsentient will receive information by way of strong, emphatic feelings and emotions from either those around them or spirit. They will experience the emotion or physical stress of others as though it was happening to them.

Claircognizance (clear knowing)

Claircognizance is one of the least well-known Psychic abilities. It quite simply means “to know things without being told”.

Wicca

Wicca (white witchcraft) is a spiritual path based on the energy and power of the five elements: fire, water, air, earth and spirit. It also focuses on the influences of the sun, moon and stars.

Wiccan readings are based on the more magical and naturalistic approach. Our wiccan readers always work positively and can guide you with simple spells, information or self-help techniques that you can use to help yourself in a specific situation, problem or issue you may have. They are only able to provide this guidance for your own personal use.

Clairaudient (clear hearing)

A Clairaudient will hear sounds or words being sent from spirit. These sounds will either be inside their head or heard as external sounds. They often contain messages for either the Clairaudient or for others.

Clairtangency

Clairtangency is often more commonly known as Psychometry. A Psychometrist can receive information by holding an object or touching an area. They perceive information about the article, its owner or history through the palms of their hands.

Tarot

A Tarot reading is done using a deck of 78 cards, known as Tarot cards. These cards are used as a tool to predict and interpret relationships, love, career, family and more. Each reading tends to have a great deal of variation as the different cards of the Tarot each have different specific meanings. The interpretation of the cards is also dependent on the order in which they appear and their position within the ‘spread’ when dealt. These meanings are open to the interpretation of the Tarot reader as they will also be working intuitively.

Angel cards

Angel cards are used in the same way as Tarot cards; they give a unique reading to the client dependent on the reader’s interpretation of the cards and the way they are dealt and spread. Angel card readers give readings that are more spiritually based and that will help guide you on your life path. Many readers use Angel cards to show which Angels are guiding and helping you and sometimes to give guidance and information direct from the Angels to you.

Numerology

Numerology works on the principle that everything in the world is ruled by numbers. Numerologists believe that numbers are magical and that by analysing the numerological value of your name and date of birth, they can provide you with valuable information about your character or that of others.

Reiki (rei = God’s wisdom or higher power; ki = life force energy)

Reiki is a form of healing which originated in Japan. It heals by flowing through the energy field of the body and charging it with positive energy. This causes any negative energy to break apart and fall away. This clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

I Ching

I Ching is a simple divination system that originated in China thousands of years ago. I Ching is cast by using three double-sided coins which are thrown and the results recorded to provide you with answers to your questions. This is a great way of obtaining concise answers to a specific question or for gaining insight or guidance on a particular topic.

Palmistry

Palmistry is the art of reading through the features on the hands. This takes into consideration many factors including the size and shape, the length of the fingers, the feel and firmness, patterns of the fingertips and the lines on the palms.

Runes

Runes are a set of symbols which have been used as a divination tool since as far back as 200 BC. Typically, runes are engraved onto a stone or piece of wood and come in a set of 24, which can either be bought or handmade. Readings are done by casting the runes and asking them a particular question. The symbol on the rune stone, the way it lands, or is picked, provides the user with the answer to their question.

Pendulum

Pendulums are a derivative from the days of using sticks to scry for water. They are used for the art of ‘dowsing’ or ‘divining’ and are made of crystal, brass or wood and suspended on a piece of chain, string or cord.

A pendulum can be used for healing or to answer a question on a specific situation you might be involved in. A pendulum can be used to help locate specific or lost items or places, e.g. dowsing over a map could give you the answer to a location question. Pendulums are especially good for questions that require a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. They are also used by holding them over the belly of a pregnant woman to predict the sex of her baby.

Feng shui (feng = wind; shui = water)

Feng shui is an ancient art that originated in China and dates back over 3000 years, bringing health and good fortune for those inhabiting it. The underlying principle of feng shui is to allow us to live in harmony with our environment so that the energy surrounding us works for us rather than against us. It reveals how to balance the energies of any given space, e.g. home, office or garden.

Astrology

The word astrology comes from the Greek astron (star) and logos (theory). Astrology works on the belief that our daily lives are affected by what happens in the sky. Astrologers believe that the cycle of the moon and the sun and the position of the planets when we were born determine many factors in our lives including our personalities, our relationships, our careers and our appearance.

Chinese astrology

Chinese astrology is a tradition that started hundreds of years ago. It divides our personalities into twelve signs, each one ruled by a different animal. Our animal sign depends on the year we were born. Using Chinese astrology can help us to discover what the future may hold. It can also be used as a tool to work out the compatibility between ourselves and others.

Aura reading

The aura has been observed for hundreds of years and is a combination of our own life force energy as well as the function of the earth or sun’s activity. The aura is seen as bright shimmery colours surrounding the body which can be observed by either the naked eye or through the use of a device which detects and measures in numerical terms a force around the body. An aura reader will be able to interpret the colours in the aura and identify, amongst other things, your emotional state, your relationships and your needs or desires.

Meditation

Meditation is an excellent way to relax and clear the mind. It has a positive impact on health and is an effective way of helping to lower blood pressure and alleviate stress. Psychics use meditation to help increase their abilities, allowing them to make contact with the spirit world. Meditation can be performed whilst sitting in any relaxing position though traditionally this would be the lotus position. It is very important to be completely comfortable as the focus has to be on the act of meditation without distractions from sore limbs or an aching back!

Dream therapy

The theory behind dream therapy believes that the main reason we dream is to make us aware of feelings or information in our minds that we may have either suppressed or not even thought of yet. Dream therapy is not so much a case of having our dreams interpreted by a therapist, but allowing us to interpret our own dreams and what they mean for us. A dream therapist will agree that although we may all dream of a certain subject or item, the meaning behind this will mean something different for each individual. The purpose of dream therapy is to unravel the meaning hidden within them.

Scrying

Scrying is a form of divination performed by gazing into something, usually a reflective surface. Scrying can be done using a variety of different tools. The most common one is thought to be the crystal ball, but it can also be done with a mirror, a bowl of water or pretty candle flame, a bowl of dark ink ‒ pretty much anything with a shiny surface. Scrying does not necessarily mean learning the future; it can be used equally well to discover what happened in the past, what is happening now and how best to react to it.

Crystal ball

Crystal balls come in many sizes. Scrying with one involves placing the crystal ball on a table and gazing into it until the user can see pictures, images, or visions. Sometimes these visions can be as clear as watching a film. The user will then interpret what they see. Sometimes a user may only see clouds of different colours and shapes; they must then decide what these clouds mean and relate them to their own lives or to those receiving the reading.

Bowl of water

Scrying with a bowl of water should be done using a clear glass bowl or tumbler with no patterns, engraving or writing. The water should be fresh, clean and clear. Gazing into the bowl of water should be done in a dimly lit room away from any harsh or artificial lighting. Fully concentrating on the water, the user will start to see pictures or clouds appear either in the water or in their mind’s eye.

Glass mirror

Scrying with a glass mirror should be done using a mirror with its back painted black. It is best done with a brand-new mirror and never with a second-hand one. Scrying must be done in a dimly lit room away from direct sunlight or artificial light. The user should sit at an angle to the mirror to avoid seeing their own reflection. Concentrating fully on the mirror, the user will begin to see moving images, pictures or clouds. They may suddenly think of something, e.g. an event or person. This should be viewed as significant in the scrying process and may well mean something either now or at a later date.

Ouija board (also commonly known as a spirit board)

The Ouija board is used as a divination tool and can be any flat surface printed with letters, numbers and other symbols. A ‘planchette’ is used to indicate answers to specific questions asked by the user or users. The users place their fingers on the planchette which then moves independently around the board to spell out messages. Nowadays, Ouija boards are considered to be a spiritual gateway used to contact the dead; however, there is no evidence of any truth to this. It is also not a tool to be dabbled with for there is a risk of contacting negative spirits, especially if you are inexperienced in using this form of divination.
